WHAT IS ROUGHCASTING?

Are you wondering exactly what roughcasting is? What it’s benefits are and whether or not you need to replace your homes roughcast?

As there is many types of roughcast render, which one is the best available in the market and most suitable for the walls of your house? What is the approximate cost for professional roughcasting?

Our team of Glasgow roughcasters are happy to answer any of your questions and will talk you through the whole process.

Roughcasting is a type of exterior finishing method where small pebbles or gravel are mixed into the concrete or plaster and applied as a finish to the external wall. This dries to form a durable and rough finish that requires less maintenance. The roughcasting materials include sand, cement, pebbles, shells plaster, and lime. You can create a new eye-catchy style by:

• Using tiny seashells in place of sand.

• The sand or gravel is tinted or colour additives used to create a certain colour.

Roughcast can be used to conceal poor workmanship. Throwing the roughcast is a durable and a better mode of application compared to troweling. This is because, with throwing, the roughcast impacts the wall with force causing better compaction and adherence to the wall.

Roughcasting protects your home against the harsh weather conditions of Scotland while enhancing aesthetic value, requires low maintenance and is highly durable.

INDICATORS TO REPLACE YOUR ROUGHCAST

Weathering can cause the roughcasting to deteriorate. When water is trapped behind the render and it freezes, the render separates from the substrate. If your roughcasting starts to crack, you should remove the whole area and replace it with a new external finish. Some signs that your roughcasting needs replaced include:

• The expansion of brickwork causes the exterior wall to crack.

• The render is visibly damaged.

• Visible erosion is caused by a mixture of moisture and lime.

• Efflorescence is caused by poor application of mortar mix or masonry creme.

• Structural damage to the building.
